The OSD (On-Screen Display) on FPV drones is a system that overlays essential flight information onto your goggles' video feed. By correctly configuring battery voltage, signal strength, flight time, and other data, you can ensure safe and efficient flight while improving video quality. This guide covers everything you need to know about setting up an FPV drone's OSD with Betaflight—from essential information to advanced customization.

How OSD Works and Essential Components

The OSD works by integrating the flight controller's (FC) built-in OSD chip, VTX (video transmitter), and goggles. Sensor data from the FC is sent to the OSD chip, which then overlays this information as text or graphics onto the camera feed and transmits it through the VTX. To use advanced OSD features, you'll need an FC with a built-in OSD—fortunately, most modern flight controllers include this.

Essential Information You Must Display

Battery voltage is the most critical piece of information. Display both cell voltage and total battery voltage. Showing battery consumption as a percentage gives you an intuitive sense of remaining flight time. Signal strength appears as either RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) or LQ (Link Quality). LQ is preferable since it accurately reflects signal quality, so make it a primary display item.

Flight time logging (Timer) is also important. Betaflight lets you set up to four timers—use the first for elapsed time from takeoff, the second to track battery usage time, and so on. These timers are useful for video editing too, so definitely enable them.

Additional Information by Situation

Altitude can be displayed if your FC has a barometer. Both absolute altitude (sea level reference) and relative altitude (from takeoff point) are useful, though relative altitude is typically preferred. If your drone has GPS, you can also display longitude, latitude, and flight speed. Distance from your home point is especially valuable for long-range flights.

Motor temperature, acceleration, and angular velocity are useful for advanced users analyzing flight data—acceleration graphs help diagnose prop wash and stability issues. However, enable these only when needed to avoid cluttering your screen.

How to Configure OSD in Betaflight

Open Betaflight Configurator and go to the OSD tab. You can drag each element to adjust its position. The key is minimizing obstruction of your view during flight. Place the most important information (battery, signal) at the screen edges or top center; secondary info goes around the periphery. You can also adjust font size—aim for readability in your goggles without compromising video aesthetics.

Pre-Detect Dangers with Alarm Settings

Battery voltage alarm is absolutely essential. Set it to trigger at 3.0V per cell—calculate that you'll have about 30 seconds to land safely after the alarm sounds. RSSI alarm is also important for immediate warning when signal weakens. Altitude alarm prevents climbing too high, and motor temperature alarm is useful for hot summer flights.

Optimizing Layout and Customization

For video production, display minimal information; for data analysis, show more. You can create two profiles and switch between them based on your flying purpose. Backup your Betaflight settings with different filenames each time—this lets you quickly restore your optimal configuration later.

Practical Tips

Don't enable everything from the start. Begin with essentials and add more as needed. Check your friends' OSD settings at your flying spot for inspiration. Also adjust text color and background based on your goggles' brightness—white text on black background for bright conditions, the reverse for dark conditions.

OSD is more than just an information display. Properly configured, it's a powerful tool that detects flight hazards early, analyzes performance, and improves video quality. When you tailor your OSD settings to your flying style and drone's purpose, every future flight will be safer and more efficient.
