The Complete Guide to FPV Drone Prop Wash — From Propeller Turbulence Causes to Perfect Solutions

When flying an FPV drone, if the drone continues to vibrate and shake instably during slow hovering or rotation, that's what we call "Prop Wash." Prop wash occurs when turbulence created by rotating propellers affects other propellers—a common problem many FPV drone pilots encounter. Understanding the root causes and applying systematic solutions can resolve it completely.

What Is Prop Wash?

Prop wash is the phenomenon where turbulence created by rotating propellers directly affects the propellers below them. In quadcopters, airflow generated by upper propellers destabilizes the lower propellers. This turbulence disrupts the normal, stable airflow and creates sudden pressure changes, causing motors to experience inconsistent loads. In response, the ESC and motors continuously attempt to correct pitch and roll, resulting in severe vibrations. At low speeds, motors have less margin for response, making prop wash effects much more pronounced.

Symptoms and Effects of Prop Wash

The symptoms of prop wash are clear: the drone shakes during low-speed hovering, trembles especially during rotation, and moves as if someone is constantly shaking the controls even when it should be stationary. This is reflected in the footage—smooth low-speed video becomes jerky and pixelated. While barely noticeable at high speeds, prop wash becomes very frustrating during slow freestyle flying or cinematic shots.

How to Solve Prop Wash

PID Tuning — The Most Effective Method

The most effective solution is PID tuning. Increasing the D gain (derivative control) slightly is key—D gain reduces vibrations without slowing the drone's response. Be careful not to raise P gain (proportional control) too high, as it can worsen the problem. Many pilots adjust the 'D Term Setpoint Weight' or use 'Feedforward Transition,' which balances the pilot's input signals against the drone's actual position feedback, suppressing unnecessary vibrations. Betaflight's advanced filter settings are also effective; low-frequency notch filters can selectively remove the specific frequency vibrations caused by prop wash.

Choosing the Right Propellers

Propeller selection matters. Since prop wash is more severe at slower rotation speeds than faster ones, choosing more efficient propellers helps. Standard multicopter propellers tend to resist prop wash better than racing sport propellers. Additionally, propellers with lower pitch experience less prop wash effect, so selecting the correct pitch for your drone's weight and performance is important. Among propellers of the same size, thicker-bladed products tend to be more stable.

Frame Structure and Center of Gravity

Frame structure also affects prop wash. If there's sufficient distance between lower and upper propellers, the turbulence impact is reduced. H-type frame layouts or designs with adequate frame height offer better prop wash resistance. You should also check the drone's center of gravity; if the CG isn't perfectly balanced, prop wash will feel more severe.

Improving Piloting Technique

Flying technique itself is important. Since prop wash is especially pronounced in slow movements, maintaining slight throttle input while practicing hovering and low-speed control helps. Instead of completely static hovering, alternating between slight climbs and descents significantly reduces prop wash effects.

Conclusion

Prop wash is a fundamental aerodynamic phenomenon that even advanced pilots can't completely eliminate. However, understanding the cause and approaching it systematically makes it manageable. When PID fine-tuning, proper propeller and frame selection, center of gravity verification, and stable flying technique practice all work together, the unstable flight caused by prop wash improves significantly. As you refine all these elements, your drone will fly smoother and more stable in the sky.
